So basically this is one of the first maps I made after getting Internet access for the first time - all the ones I had made prior to that one had been built with no knowledge at all of the stuff that had been released on the www ever since the release of the game back in 1996. I had never heard of the Roch maps before and would tend to think that I was bloody damn good at Duke mapping... Then I played all those maps that were new for me, and it totally blew me away. So I thought I would try to make a map that would be just as detailed, and ended up making this one. It's based on a real world place in my city (Blois, France), with some modifications of course. Back story is that you're driving home back from a party on some alcoholized saturday night and end up having an accident with a cop car full of... Pigcops. Then you realize that the city has been taken over by aliens (or is it just your buzzed mind ?...) and that you will have to do some cleaning-up before you steal a car to drive back home for the rest of the night. Design-wise this level is much better than all the maps I had previously released back then - even though I never meant to make it look Roch-inspired at all except for the cars (at which I failed miserably), I guess that's how it ended up looking, since I put a lot of effort into detailing the whole thing to make it look as realistic as possible (I even remember taking pics of the real place and working out the design from them), and Roch maps are known to look like realistic cities. I would even say that the design is above average in general if it weren't for some of those indoor locations who are really cramped (the map as a whole feels like it was built at a small scale, but it only gets annoying indoors). But as a whole it still looks clean and good. Gameplay-wise the map is a bunch of fun as well - it's a reasonably short one (pretty much as lengthy as some of the original 3D Realms levels, E1L1 'Hollywood Holocaust' or E1L2 'Red Light District' would be a good comparison), but you never get bored of it, the puzzles are pretty straightforward as well, basically it's a short key-run, and you will have to find a couple of switches as well. The fights aren't that tough, you will especially encounter Liztroops, Pigcops and some Lizmen, as well as a few Commanders near the end and one mid-level Battlelord. I've actually been thinking of remaking this map for a while to make it even better, get rid of the cramped locations (as well as the horrible sky texture...) and add even more detail, which is something I will probably end up doing one of those days. Take a gander meanwhile ! Not my best map by far, yet still a very solid and fun one, I still like it a lot after all these years.
